FAIRBURY – Breakfast on the farm Saturday kicked off June Dairy Month at Kilgus Farmstead near Fairbury.
“They served close to 600 breakfast this morning,” said Marla Behrends, industry relations manager with the Midwest Dairy Association. “It’s fun for the kids to see the cows and the goats and pigs and everything they have here, and not only that, but then have a great breakfast, as well.”
The Kilgus family served eggs, biscuits and gravy, milk and juice for just $1.00 per person, which is approximately the farmer’s share of what that breakfast is really worth.
Behrends said this year’s celebrations are extra special as the National Dairy Council is turning 100 years old.
The Midwest Dairy Association continues to work with the NFL on the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, and also maintains key partnerships with many restaurants and retail outlets to continue to promote dairy products to consumers in a variety of different ways. A new cookbook available this year will also highlight the work dairy farmers do each day.
“It has recipes and focuses on people from all 50 states,” said Behrends. “The neat part about it is you’ll see all kind of cow pictures, so there are recipes from all over the United States and of course we have all of the breeds that are focused on, too.”
Behrends said cookbooks will be on sale in the Dairy Building at the Illinois State Fair this year.
