SPRINGFIELD – Illinois will have a new auditor general in 2016, following the retirement of Bill Holland.
Two members of the legislature, State Reps. Frank Mautino (D-Spring Valley) and Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook), are among sixteen applicants. Five to ten finalists, including Mautino and Nekritz, will be interviewed by the Legislative Audit Commission, from which Mautino recently stepped down as co-chair.
While the applicants’ names are not being released because some have asked for confidentiality, it appears Mautino and Nekritz are the best known to the general public.
Nekritz, who said she has built her time in Springfield on “making government more effective and making sure we are spending our taxpayer dollars in the best way we can,” says becoming auditor general would be a good extension of that.
“I would be excited to be auditor general,” Nekritz said. “If that doesn’t work out, I’m still very much motivated and excited about my work in the General Assembly. And if it turns out to be Rep. Mautino, I would be very excited about that as well, and would look forward to working with him in that new capacity.”
The interviews are expected in October, and the commission will then make a recommendation to the General Assembly.
