CHICAGO – A Chicago-based think-tank has released a new report on the level of taxpayer burden on each state in the U.S.
The numbers are not pretty for the Illinois taxpayer. Truth in Accounting ranked all 50 states by level of taxpayer burden and found Illinois is only better off than New Jersey and Connecticut in terms of burdensome taxes. They calculated Illinois has $184 billion in debt. Split that up between every taxpayer in the state and each one owes around $45,000.
TIA Founder Sheila Weinberg urges state leaders to acknowledge the state’s true deficit and address this situation immediately before Illinois sinks further into debt.
