SPRINGFIELD – The number of flu cases in Illinois remains low, but that may be changing.
Illinois Department of Public Health Assistant Director Michelle Gentry Wiseman said the number of flu cases increases in late December through mid February. The flu can be especially hard on the very young and very old.
“Those are gonna be the first folks who are going to have ill consequences from getting influenza,” said Wiseman. “Especially around the holidays when everybody is getting together for parties or exchanging gifts. Even if you don’t get a shot for yourself, get it for your family.”
Wiseman said it takes up to two weeks for the vaccine to take effect. She also reminds us that those who hate needles can receive the vaccine through a mist.
She said those with compromised immune systems also have a hard time fighting off the virus. Wiseman says there are drugs that can help reduce symptoms or shorten the length of the flu, but a vaccine is still best.
